July 4th Cruise to Sarah's Creek led by Kevin and Carol Kibbe and Jean and Jerry Pattenaude.
Sarah’s Creek is located about one (1) mile east of the Coleman Bridge over the York River, about 28 NM from Hampton Yacht Club. Our chosen anchorage, we hope, will be just across the creek from York River Yacht Haven (37°15.407’N • 76°28.610’W). Water depth leading up to anchorage off the main river is between seven (7) and eighteen (18) feet. Anchorage was between 6 and 7 feet. Hedonist and Shangri-La both found good purchase and braved a pretty decent storm on our last stop there.
For those not interested in anchoring, there is York River Yacht Haven (YRYH). As of this writing, they cannot support our whole group, but individuals are welcome to make reservations. They are currently in the process of renewing annual slip holders, so they said things tend to shuffle around a bit.
From the anchorage we can take advantage of all YRYH has to offer. Dinghy dockage costs $20 and gets you a secure place to tie up, use of the laundry and shower facilities. There is a freshwater pool on site, that will cost $30 more dollars to visit…wouldn’t be the first time we swam in the river though! Also on-site is a pretty good bar and restaurant, frequented by many area visitors.
Last year we stopped on our way north for the 4th of July and were amazed at the fireworks shows. WE WERE SURROUNDED by them. It seemed they were on both sides of the York River and everywhere. Our anchorage was far enough away to avoid ash and embers and close enough to enjoy most of the show, unfortunately if you long for the chest crushing percussion of the booms, you may want to move or float on your dinghy nearer the Coleman.
We will plan for Cocktails and pupus onboard Shangri-La at 0530 (kidding)…let’s do 1730 on the 4th. Prior swim engagements encouraged, and there’s been talk of a certain blindfolded dinghy race revival….
