SAIL BEYOND CANCER® VIRGINIA
Honoring those challenged by cancer by harnessing the healing powers of wind, water, and sail
On June 12, 2025, the fourth chapter of Sail Beyond Cancer® officially launched its inaugural season in Virginia with its first mission sail aboard s/v Solace, a 2016 Beneteau Oceanis 41.1 that was generously donated to the organization. In its first season, more than 350 individuals “left cancer at the dock” while on a private, 3-hour mission sail... at no cost to them!
Each SBC VA mission sail is crewed by a team of three dedicated volunteers (Captain, First Mate & Ambassador), who are committed to bringing people together on the water to help ease the stresses, fears, and unknowns that cancer brings. Every respite sail is an opportunity for an individual challenged by cancer to make precious memories with the loved ones and caregivers who have also been impacted by their diagnosis.
The 2026 Sailing Season is positioned to be a year of growth as we continue to develop relationships within the oncology community. As part of our growth, we are building out our Hybrid Boat Program in which vessel owners use their own boats to host mission sails. In addition to expanding capacity, adding new departure locations will allow for increased accessibility for the nominees and their loved ones. Cancer patients are nominated from across the state, and in 2025, one-third were from Southside Hampton Roads. Our goal for 2026 is to have several vessels departing from Norfolk (Little Creek/Willoughby), Hampton, and Deltaville.
BBSA Members! We invite you to join volunteers from across the state at our 2026 Volunteer Kickoff on Saturday, February 21. The kickoff will be a great opportunity for new and returning volunteers to meet and mingle – I hope you can join us and be inspired for a season of impact!
Please RSVP at: SBCV RSVP (by Sun, Feb 15), and don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions!
